Crossroads University

An Innovative Cultural Learning Program

Crossroads University is an innovative cultural learning program developed by noted author, artist, and cultural anthropologist Denise Alvarado. As an online learning resource, our purpose is to observe and preserve the folkways and spiritual systems of the American South.

Crossroads University's courses are designed to pass on indigenous knowledges that are otherwise being lost and forgotten in today's busy, technology-focused world. We provide access to these knowledges to those who may otherwise not have such access, fill in the blanks for those that do, and help those who wish to reconnect to their cultural roots. Teaching about these indigenous folkways and spiritual systems ensures their survival, preservation, and continuation of practice. Our courses are ideal for students of the social sciences, folk practitioners, and the curious alike.

An Open and Inclusive Learning Environment

With respect for our Elders and Ancestors

Crossroads University believes in an open and inclusive learning environment and does not discriminate based on race, color, gender, or creed. Anyone with a sincere desire to learn is welcome here. We do not believe in cultural, spiritual, and religious gatekeeping. Rather, we are tradition-keepers doing our best to safely pass on knowledge through a respectful process.

Crossroads University is the educational arm of the American Rootwork Association.

Baba Eli Norris

Senior Instructor/Consultant

Baba Eli Norris (Awotunde Ayodele Ifalere) was born and raised in Northwestern Pennsylvania where he sent most of his early life (A handful of years living in Ohio being the exception). He has been in Southeastern Louisiana since 2007, where he earns a living as a nurse. Eli discovered Ifa and ATRs in general in the late 90s and though reliable information proved sparse for many years, he absorbed what information he could. In 2002, as a practicing Wiccan, Baba Eli was at a pagan festival when he met a practitioner of New Orleans Voodoo. She reintroduced him to the Orisha and through her he began a journey that led eventually to being initiated as a Babalawo in 2012. Coming full circle, he met Mama D that same year and enrolled in her New Orleans Voodoo course. He now practices Ifa and New Orleans Voodoo side by side, while still maintaining many of his Wiccan practices. Baba Eli is a practitioner of New Orleans Voodoo, Hoodoo, Ifa, and has recently begun to incorporate cardology into his spiritual retinue. He can be reached at [email protected]. Ayodele
