Our Certified in Professional Rootworker
(C.P.R.) program is a two year intensive program created to lay the
foundation for learning the magical and spiritual technologies of our ancestors.
Our curriculum is based on the comprehensive study and
exploration of the unique blend of indigenous cosmologies of the
American south, including African-derived traditions and Native
American traditions.
Our program has a strong emphasis on
ancestor reverence and assists students in fostering strong
interpersonal relationships with their familial, cultural, and
archetypal ancestors.
Our program offers an additional business option
for those who wish to go into business for themselves or improve
their current businesses; however, this is not the main focus of
the program and only comes after a thorough understanding of the
basics are learned and a proficiency in their application has
been demonstrated.
We are of the opinion that far too many
people are hanging shingles on their websites and doors with the
title of "rootworker" without having the necessary experiences
to do so. Rootworkers and traditional healers of the south have
an intimate relationship with Mother Earth, gather their own
roots and herbs, understand their properties and uses, and know
how to prepare them for use. Our students do not rely on store
bought preparations and are expected to learn things the hard
way, like our grandmothers and grandfathers did, and their
grandmothers and grandfathers did.
Our approach is in response to the
phenomenon of cultural appropriation which is defined in this
context as the adoption of indigenous elements of one culture by
another as an extension of the process of colonization. When
this occurs without regard for the sociohistorical context of
the indigenous culture, the indigenous elements lose their
original meanings and are redefined by the subordinating
culture. We seek to restore the indigenous narrative by putting
the "root" - as defined by our ancestors - back in "rootwork"
and involving indigenous people and people of mixed heritage
representative of the Southern folk traditions in the
dissemination of cultural information.
